Liberals promise modernization of Home Buyers Plan

The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) reports that Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada Justin Trudeau has pledge to modernize the Home Buyer’s Plan (HBP) if elected, by enabling Canadians impacted by significant life changes to access the program and use money from their Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSPs) to buy a house without tax penalty.

The HBP is a REALTOR®-driven initiative, introduced by the government as a short-term stimulus measure in 1992 and made a permanent program in 1994. Since its inception, over 2.8 million Canadian have used the HBP  to help make home ownership more affordable. The program allows Canadians to borrow, on a repayable basis, from their own RRSPs to purchase a home.

For more information on the Liberal Party of Canada’s announcement, please review the Affordable Housing for Canadians backgrounder on the party’s website.

For more information on CREA’s proposal on this topic, please review CREA’s Support Canadian Workers Through Job Relocation infographic on REALTOR Link®.

CREA eases rules for using REALTOR® certification mark

The CREA Board of Directors approved a series of changes to the rules governing the use of the REALTOR® trademarks at its meeting on August 25, 2015. The purpose of this initiative is to make the use of the marks easier, with a view to increasing proper use and reducing improper use. The changes to CREA’s Rules and Policies will make the use of the REALTOR® trademark simpler and easier to understand. The changes are also intended to reflect the reality of how CREA’s trademarks are used on the Internet. (more…)

Have they been knocking on your door?

Federal candidates, that is.  If you have the opportunity to meet with any of the candidates over the next few weeks, consider asking them some of these questions.   Responses can be submitted to Megan at meganp@rahb.ca or through the REALTOR® Action Network, www.realtoractionnetwork.ca.

Sample Questions

  1. A strong, stable housing market is important for Canada’s economy. To that end, how can the federal government continue to support Canadian homeownership, especially for first time buyers, a significant percentage of whom borrow from their parents to buy a home?
  2. Have you heard of the Home Buyers’ Plan? Have you or someone you know used the Home Buyers’ Plan?
  3. REALTORS® are urging the government to index the Home Buyers’ Plan so it keeps pace with inflation. If you’re elected, will you lend your support?
  4. How will your government support small-business people, like REALTORS®, to ensure their businesses thrive? How do you feel about lowering tax rate for small businesses?
  5. Canada’s infrastructure is important – it is the backbone of the communities in which we live and work. If you are elected, what does your party propose to do to ensure our infrastructure meets our needs today and the needs of our kids in the future?
  6. What are your thoughts on urban development, and how will your government support cities’ growth?
  7. What is your party’s position on increasing the availability of environmentally friendly transportation alternatives (such as High Occupancy Vehicle lanes,
    public transit, cycling infrastructure)?
  8. What are your thoughts on public transit, and how will your government help cities move people more efficiently?

From the Board table

The Board of Directors were back in the board room in September after a busy summer; here’s what happened:

  • The Board discussed skills required for the 2016 Board of Directors to help the Nomination Committee recruit candidates for election.
  • A report was received and a recommendation passed making broker load training optional. Training will still be available, but no longer mandatory. The rationale behind this decision was the increased technical competency of our members and the ease of loading in the new Matrix system.
  • The volunteers were selected for the Honorary Life Task Force.
  • The Board considered the implementation of IDX, and agreed to move forward with implementation as soon as practicable, following the full roll out of
Matrix. The decision to make the IDX opt-out was made to strengthen the quality of the product. Members will have ample opportunity to find out
more prior to the service going live.
  • The Board considered bylaw changes that would impact the composition of the Board of Directors.  The recommendations were referred back to the
    Governance Committee for more research.

And the award goes to …

That all depends on you!

Do you know a RAHB member who demonstrates exceptional qualities, enthusiasm and perseverance or has gone above and beyond to serve their fellow RAHB members? Is that person currently part of a RAHB committee?

Then nominate that person as Volunteer of the Year!

Do you know a RAHB member who has shown exceptional dedication and service to RAHB and has contributed positively to RAHB for three or more years?

Then nominate that person for the Award of Merit!

Do you know a RAHB member who has shown outstanding dedication to the real estate industry and exceptional volunteer service to their community for three or more years?

Then nominate that person for the Outstanding Community Service Award!

RAHB service awards are presented to RAHB members who meet the stringent criteria for the three awards. A panel of RAHB members judges all nominations, so these really are awards presented by your peers.

Here’s what you need to know:

Nomination/Application forms are available on REALTOR Link® under the Member Services tab.  Full details about the awards are found on the Application/Nomination forms.

The form can be used to nominate a colleague or to apply for the award yourself!

It’s easy to fill out the forms. If you don’t have all the information about your nominee’s committee/volunteer history, you can ask your nominee to help you. Or if you want to keep the nomination a secret, you can write “please verify” on the nomination form and your nominee’s history will be checked before the nomination is presented.

The Application/Nomination form can be completed online and emailed to Sheila at the RAHB office (sheilas@rahb.ca), or printed, completed and sent
to the RAHB office.

Deadline for nominations is Friday, November 27, 2015.

If you have any questions about the awards or how to nominate a deserving RAHB member, contact Valerie (valeriew@rahb.ca, 905.529.8101 x294) or Sheila
(sheilas@rahb.ca, 905.529.8101 x234) at the RAHB office.
