RAHB Scholarship in Memory of Karan Barker Recipients – 2019

Scholarships in Memory of Karan Baker are presented each year to students who are children or grandchildren of RAHB members or RAHB staff. All recipients are attending or will be attending university, college or trade school. These young people have demonstrated academic excellence and a high level of involvement in their school or the community – often both.

RAHB awarded three scholarships of $2,000 each, totalling $6,000 for this year. RAHB began awarding these scholarships in 2001, and with this year’s awards, we have helped 78 students with $112,500 in total scholarship money.

Our first recipient is Pamela Czart, the daughter of Marzena Czart of Royal LePage Macro Realty. She is a graduate of Loyola Catholic Secondary School, as well as The University of Western Ontario, and is currently enrolled as a medical student at McMaster University.

Pamela has volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters, where she assumed the role of Go Girls! Mentor and facilitated three Go Girls! Groups. As a mentor, Pamela lead a group of approximately 7-10 girls from Grades 6,7 and 8 to facilitate discussions, execute program material and run physical activities.

Our second recipient is Liam Outlaw, the grandson of Robert Outlaw of Thornberry, Outlaw & Associates Limited. Liam is a graduate of Ancaster High School, where he was elected as student council president, and recommended by the principal to sit on the Hamilton Chief of Police Student Advisory Committee. He also began an athletic club that promoted inclusivity, and visited with schools across Hamilton to teach students how to create their own inclusive athletic clubs.

Liam is currently attending Huron University at Western University, in the Bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies program.

Our third and final recipient is Jelena Vukadin, daughter of Pete Vukadin of Royal LePage State Realty. Jelena graduated from Westmount Secondary School and is currently in her fourth year at Wilfred Laurier University in the Honours Bachelor of Business Administration program.

While at Laurier, Jelena co-founded the Orphan Sponsorship program, which sponsored orphans globally, but also donated necessary items to One Roof – a homeless youth shelter in Waterloo.

She also completed an 8-month co-op work term at Bayer Inc. within the Accounting Team, where she worked on several projects and initiatives, and achieved two separate recognition awards for her effective work on two distinct projects.

Jelena hopes to complete her MBA in the future.

Scholarship applications for next year will be released in May 2020.
