If you’ve ever chosen a movie on Netflix based on their recommendation or said “Ok Google” then asked for directions, or made a purchase on Amazon that they have suggested just for you, you have used artificial intelligence or AI.
Simply put, AI is the mimicking of human intelligence through the use of technology. Today’s AI is referred to as Narrow AI. You can create a machine to play chess, drive by itself, or analyze vast amounts of data for patterns, but that same form of AI can’t knit, walk up stairs, think creatively or demonstrate empathy. If you’re thinking of the movies like Terminator, Matrix, or iRobot you’re thinking about General AI which is decades away according to most experts’ opinion.

For today’s world, robots that welcome you to your bank branch, 3D printers that can build a house in 48 hours, virtual reality staging of your home, and chatbots that make your organization accessible 24/7 are some examples of AI that exist right now. In fact, think of any routine task. With the right scale, funding, and champions, that task will probably be automated by organizations sooner than later. And the most successful organizations of the future will be early adopters, creating a culture that balances the best of human and AI capabilities.
