Karan Barker was a 25-year employee and former Executive Officer at the REALTORS® Association of Hamilton-Burlington.  During her time with the association, Karan was involved in setting up the scholarship program that now bears her name.  Karan was active on committees at the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, the Hamilton-Halton Home Builders’ Association and the Ontario Real Estate Associaton.  Karan received the Tony Kafun Award from OREA and the W. Frank Johns Award from CREA, both presented to the top executive officers in the real estate profession.  Karan passed away in 2001.

Scholarships in the amount of $2,000 were awarded to the following children or grandchildren of RAHB members at the recent Annual Election Meeting.  Scholarship Task Force chair Jamie Edwards made the presentations.

Teresa AntonyTeresa Antony is the daughter of Saji Antony of Royal LePage State Realty.  Teresa is a graduate of Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary School in Stoney Creek and is now attending Western University in the Medical Sciences Program.  Her dream is to become a practicing physician who travels to third world countries to help those without access to health care.

Teresa was a member of social justice groups in school and led events that raised awareness for helping others in the community and around the world.  She was also a day care centre leader, scorekeeper for Newman youth basketball, a soccer coach, tutor for math and science, member of numerous clubs and teams, a volunteer at the General Hospital operation clinic as well as several nursing homes and Good Shepherd, and has a black belt in karate.  Teresa was also an altar server and lector of her church.

 

Christopher HarrisonChristopher Harrison is the son of Richard Harrison of Royal LePage Burloak.  Christopher graduated from Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School and is attending McMaster University in the Political Science program.  His goal is to enter law school after obtaining his undergraduate degree.

Christopher served as school Prefect, Eucharist minister and retreat leader captain.  He was a mock trial lawyer and student senator, and was on the Reach for the Top team.  Christopher participated on the HOPE trip to the Dominican Republic, where he helped build a home.  He was a member of the Teen Tour Band and was Drum Major; he intends to audition for a position playing trumpet in The Cadets, the top drum corps in America, for the 2014 summer touring season.  Christopher was on the honour roll and was an Ontario scholar in each of his high school years, and received the Sharing the Spirit Award of Student Excellence, the Principal’s Award, the Father Patrick Fogarty Award as the Ontario Catholic Student of the Year and the Technology Design Academic Award.

 

Liam SpadoniLiam Spadoni is the grandson of Mario Cupido.  Liam is a graduate of St. Thomas More school and is now attending McMaster in the faculty of Business.   Once he graduates with a degree in Commerce, Liam intends to work in the Hamilton business community, possibly in real estate or real estate law.

Liam was involved on his school’s football, track and field, golf, co-ed volleyball, hockey and intramural dodge ball teams, was involved with the Hallowe’en for Hunger campaign, Pilgrimage Walk for Haiti and Christmas Miracle.  He also played Hamilton Rep hockey and soccer, and was on the Hamilton/Halton golf tour and CAN/USA games.  He volunteered in his church, with a hockey camp and for the MITO Foundation.  He was the recipient of the Minds in Motion award for students with learning disabilities, the 2013 Business Award, Specialist High Skills Major Award for business, the Regina Mundi Catholic Women’s League Award and the Director’s Award for overall excellence in high school.
